All Ranks (commonly known as SDAR)
This uniform, Ceremonial 1A, is worn by all ranks of the New Zealand Army on formal occasions. The female version is slightly different in design and has optional slacks or skirt.
Officer Rank is worn on the shoulder. The photo to your left in this case a Captain's rank can be identified (check out Ranks for more information). This officer's lapel badge indicates which corps he/she belongs to (see Corps for more information).
The Sam Browne leather belt, shoulder strap and the brown gloves distinguish this man as an Officer. The Sam Browne also has a practical use as it holds the officer's sword. Warrant Officers also wear these belts but never carry swords.
The hat worn here is known as a "Lemon Squeezer" and dates back to 1916. The red band is known as a puggaree, a tradition from India, where the puggaree was worn as a neck protector. Medals are worn on the left side of the chest.
The photo to your right shows some different features to the SDAR uniform. While officer rank is worn on the shoulder, soldier rank insignia is worn on either the sleeve or the wrist. The shoulder sashes (Mokowaewae) are traditional Army colours, black and red, and worn by all Senior Non Commissioned Officers (SNCOs). The hats worn by this group are Mounted Rifles slouch hats which date back to the South African War in 1899. These hats (as the original New Zealand military hat) are now used for all but the most formal occasions. On the most formal occasions the Lemon Squeezer is worn.
The Sam Browne belt and shoulder strap, and the brown gloves worn by the soldier at the right distinguish him as a Warrant Officer. The hat badges and lapel badges worn by the group depict their corps, which in this case is Military Police.
