Night Vision Equipment (NVE)

The NZ Army has had night vision equipment in service since 1995.  Since then however, technology has continued to develop, ever increasing our ability to operate effectively in both dark and poor visibility conditions.  Keeping abreast of this technology is important and as such a modernisation project is currently running to update our current NVE, some of which is described below.

The M983 Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) can be face mask or helmet mounted and provide vehicle crews and soldiers the ability to travel, fight and observe in the dark. They are used for general night work and observation.  The M983 is a self-contained night vision system, which can be worn on the head or handheld. It may be used with or without a helmet and a respirator.
