Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are becoming more widely used in both military and commercial applications.  They aid in navigation by displaying a grid reference based on the tri-angulation of received radio signals from the known locations of geo-stationary satellites.

The Precision Lightweight GPS Receiver (PLGR)

The Navigation Set, commercially known as the Precision Lightweight GPS Receiver (PLGR), is a hand held, battery operated, 12 channel Precision Positioning System (PPS) receiver loaded with a software version specifically tailored for Australian/New Zealand requirements. The software incorporates 95 predefined Map Datums, including NZ Map Grid (NZMG), and six user defined options.

The NZ Army has both PGLR and PGLR II as well as Garmin GPS in service.  These are used on foot patrols or in vehicles and some are connected into the vehicle navigation systems.  These GPS units have been in service since 1997.
