JCB 4CXM

The JCB 4CXM is a multipurpose-wheeled tractor fitted with a rock breaker, ditch buckets and a multipurpose bucket. The JCB 4CXM is a multipurpose-wheeled tractor fitted with a rock breaker, ditch buckets and a multipurpose bucket which can be used on both vertical and horizontal construction tasks.

This is a very new piece of equipment that was introduced into service mid 2006.  It is operated by RNZE (Royal New Zealand Engineers) units for light excavating and earthmoving tasks in support of the NZ Army in peace and war.

The RNZE has a number of different types of tractors, which are suitable for a wide variety of combat and logistic engineering tasks.  The range of tracked tractors is listed below, but two of the more common are the light tractor, full tracked, low speed Caterpillar D4E, and the more modern high sprocket tractor, low speed, full tracked Caterpillar D8N.

The Motor Grader is a self-propelled power operated machine with an adjustable cutting blade mounted under the chassis. There are two types of grader employed within the NZ Army; the CAT 130G Motor Grader which has a 12 foot mouldboard and 3 shank ripper scarifier, and the larger CAT 14G Motor Grader which has a 14 foot blade and rear mounted rippers/scarifiers.

Motor Graders are operated by the RNZE, with their primary role being levelling and ditching in the construction of roads, airfields and hard standing. Graders are used for earthworks and horizontal construction tasks.

Grove AT635B Crane

Off the shelf All Terraine Hydraulic Crane.

The All-Terrain Hydraulic Crane, model AT 635B is manufactured by Grove (UK). The crane carrier is fitted with a Cummins 6CT, 8.3 litre, 6 cylinder, 4 cycle, turbo charged, direct injection diesel engine, producing 211HP (157kW) at 2400rpm. It has eight forward and eight reverse gears with an engine mounted torque converter, and has all wheel drive and fully independent power steering. The boom has 360 degrees continuous rotation and can extend from between 8.51m and 27.44m. 

The crane's role is to provide the NZ Army with a lifting, positioning, loading/unloading container capability and as an engineer all terrain construction crane.

The AT635B Crane is a specialist service vehicle capable of:

  • Handling 10 to 20 ft ISO containers (incl RFS)
  • Vertical construction
  • All weather rough terrain operation
  • Three steering modes - two wheel, four wheel and crab steer
  • Limited self recovery capability.

Operational Characteristics

Maximum lift is 12.85 tonne at a six metre load centre. Vehicle range is 500km at an average convoy speed of 55km/h with a maximum speed of 80km/h. Maximum climbing grade ability is 65%.

MB2028 Dump Truck

The Mercedes Benz 2028 is a general service 6 x 6 cargo and dump truck.  It is a soft skinned vehicle primarily designed to transport and dump bulk road making materials.  The vehicle is fitted with a hydraulic three-way tipping tray with a seven cubic metre capacity.  In addition to carrying road making materials the vehicle can be adapted to carry general cargo. 

The vehicle can also tow a 17 tonne trailer for the transport of construction plant and has a good cross-country capability.
