Brigadier Ants Howie, Director Army Reserve

"The Army Reserve offers the best of both the civilian and military worlds, allowing its members to maintain a full-time civilian career while serving part-time in New Zealand's Army and producing tomorrow’s leaders in both the Army and the Private Sector."

- BRIGADIER Ants Howie
Director Army Reserve

Welcome to the Army Reserve website. The Army Reserve comprises those members of the Territorial Force (TF) of the New Zealand Army as defined by the Defence Act 1990. It is the part-time component of the Territorial Force of the New Zealand's Army, made up of volunteers from all walks of life who take time away from their civilian lives for at least 20 days a year to serve their country.

The Army Reserve offers the best of both the military and civilian worlds, allowing its members to maintain a full-time civilian career while serving part-time in the New Zealand Army.

Training for the Solomon IslandsToday's Army Reserve is more than just putting on a uniform and charging up a hill. The often complex overseas environments in which New Zealand's soldiers find themselves require a wide range of skills where conflict-resolution is as much a part of the job as security and other traditional military tasks.

Although operational service is voluntary for Army Reserve Soldiers, today's Army Reserve trains with an operational focus: allowing volunteers to take their place on overseas missions from the tropics of the Solomon Islands to the streets of Dili and the rugged mountains of Afghanistan.

Army Reserve soldiers are trained to high standards in order to be able to serve as effective members of the New Zealand Army, where the present strategic environment provides tasks which require the unique combination of civilian and military skills possessed by the Army Reserve.

"The present strategic environment, provides tasks which require the unique combination of civilian and military skills which Army Reserve soldiers possess."

The NZ Army recognizes the sacrifices that Army Reserve soldiers make, and constantly strives to develop practices and strategies which support our soldiers, professionally, personally and financially.

Commitment to the Army Reserve is not a one way street; your commitment to us is reciprocated in equal measure by the Army in supporting our Army Reserve soldiers.
