The NZ Army realises that its soldiers change, develop and re-assess their goals over time. Rather than losing someone altogether who may be thinking about leaving, the NZ Army would rather facilitate a career change and transfer their skills, knowledge and experience internally within the Army.

There are a multitude of different careers and internally recruited careers on offer in the NZ Army. Soldiers can apply to trade change or join an internally recruited career after at least one year in the Army and if they meet the minimum entry requirements for that trade. They will generally be assessed during a tour of duty (TOD) to their chosen trade or attempt a selection course prior to being given approval to change. They will then be retrained in their new speciality.
