Chaplain

The recovered Victoria Crosses and other medals are blessed by the Army Chaplains [Chaplain Te Kahu on right] (OH-08-0751-11).

General

Armed Forces Chaplains are required to be qualified in theological, military and chaplain specialist matters. To enable Chaplains to be qualified to appropriate levels, training is to be given in initial, continuation and advanced categories.

In consultation with the Principal Chaplain (PC) of the Service concerned and the Chaplains' Dominion Advisory Council, the Principal Defence Chaplain (PDC) is to ensure that Chaplains are trained to required levels giving due recognition to training already received, qualifications gained, and time away from their unit.

Entry Qualifications and Training

Clergymen entering the New Zealand Armed Forces on both regular and non-regular engagements are to be theologically qualified in their denomination to ordination standard. For entry to the Regular Force they are to have at least three years parish experience and to have completed a refresher course in ethics.

Military Qualifications. As soon as possible after entry a Chaplain is to attend a suitable initial entry course arranged by their Service to familiarise them with Service customs, procedures, laws and concepts.

Chaplain Specialist. A Chaplain is to be encouraged to complete relevant courses where available, to enhance the efficiency and impact of his/her chaplaincy. Such courses should be approved by the Chaplain's PC and PDC and directed through the Director of Educational Services, Defence HQ.

Continuation Training

Continuation training is a required part of the Chaplain's service.

Professional. A Chaplain is required to attend denominational training at retreats, clergy schools or seminars for up to three days each year, and to attend such other relevant training courses as may be approved by Defence.

Military. During the first five years of service and preferably prior to promotion to Chaplain Class 3 a Chaplain should be given opportunity to attend any suitable portions of an administration or staff course which in the view of the Service concerned would be of value.

Specialist. During this period of service a Chaplain is required to attend the Annual Chaplain School approved by Defence Headquarters and conducted by the Principal Defence Chaplain, and to undertake as required correspondence courses in topics relevant to chaplaincy.

Advanced Training

During a period of service extending beyond five years a Chaplain is to be encouraged to undertake advanced training in topics relevant to their professional and service career:

Professional. A Chaplain may undergo advanced training, organised and required by his/her Church. Attendance at such courses is dependant on the exigencies of the service.

Military. In those cases where a Chaplain is likely in the course of their military service to be given higher appointments in Defence chaplaincy, consideration should be given to their attendance at such further administrative/staff training as may be appropriate.

Specialist. It is desirable that during his/her period of service a Chaplain attend the following courses:

  • Marriage Guidance Course
  • Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Course Family Counselling Course
  • Advanced Counselling Technique Course

Additional Training

Chaplains may attend such relevant courses as may be arranged from time to time to meet special needs as authorised by Defence Headquarters. These will cover professional topics, military studies, current affairs, service lectures and seminars.

Resettlement

In the last 12 months of service a Chaplain may be authorised by Defence Headquarters to attend a post ordination study course.
