Soldiers Home from the Solomon Islands

Seventy-six New Zealand Army soldiers will return home from the Solomon Islands on June 16 2006.

A further 41 troops remain in the region in support of the Regional Assistance Mission in the Solomon Islands (RAMSI), providing security to Rove Prison.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) increased it’s presence in the Solomon Islands in April following riots and unrest in Honiara.

While some troops are returning home, the number of personnel deployed to the Solomon Islands will remain higher than what it was prior to last April’s riots.

"Now that the situation in the Solomon Islands has stabilised and with full consultation and support from RAMSI and the New Zealand Government, we are bringing those additional personnel home," said Commander Joint Force New Zealand, Rear Admiral Jack Steer

"The soldiers, who deployed to the region at short notice, have done a good job helping to create a safe and secure environment.  Their family and friends should also be commended for the support they offer," said Admiral Steer.
