Going Solo - the Army Band

The New Zealand Army Band held its annual solo competition in September, providing members with another opportunity to show off their musical talent. This year the band had the assistance of two fine piano accompanists Mrs Beverly Kench and Mr Michael Dawson. It is not an easy undertaking to learn all the various pieces and they did a wonderful job. The adjudicators for this year were POMUS Michael Miller and POMUS Riwai Hina from the Royal New Zealand Navy Band, and Mr David Bremner, Principal Trombone player for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. This year produced two doubles, that of WO 1 Graeme Bremner in the Open Brass and SGT Phil Johnston in the Premiere Brass section. WO 1 Bremner, who is a former bandmaster, has recently rejoined the unit. SGT Johnston adds this win to his National title of ‘Champion of Champions’ which he won at the National Brass Band Contest in July, and earns him the right to take part in the prestigious Ern Keller Memorial Brass event in Sydney next February, an event he won in 1999. This year the cup for Man, Military and Music was presented to PTE Jason Shortland.
