Putting Your Hand Up

The Nomination Process

The nomination process is relatively simple. If you are keen to deploy overseas on a mission, or to take on a full time position with the RF, there are three basic steps you need to take to ensure your name is considered.

Step 1. Perform well now.
NZDF has high standards and a good reputation which will not be compromised. There is a lot at stake on operations. You need to demonstrate good competence and a positive attitude in your training.

Step 2.
Tell us. Obviously the Army needs to know you are keen if you are going to be considered. Don’t just talk about it. Let the Army know ASAP either through your CO or contacting the HR Branch. That’s MS Branch for officers (mark.walters@nzdf.mil.nz) or MCM Branch for soldiers (craig.thorn@nzdf.mil.nz).

Step 3.
Command clearance via the chain of command. CO s and Formation Commanders will be asked to endorse all nominations. Without command clearance you will not be considered. It will be helpful if you can discuss this beforehand with your immediate commander or CO or RSM. Regardless, all nominations are referred to the chain of command. Formation HQs will forward your nomination to MS or GSO1 MCM. These Staffs, on behalf of CA, conduct a selection process from the nominations. Operational nominations are endorsed and forwarded to HQ JFNZ. HQ JFNZ will receive all nominations from each of the services and make the final decision. Notification of your selection will be advised ASAP to give you maximum time to organise your affairs.

Pre Deployment Training (PDT)
All missions conduct PDT to prepare personnel for the particular mission prior to the deployment. This training is essential for all who are deploying. PDT is longer for the bigger missions such as Op CRIB, Op GYRO , Op RATA . PDT is all about getting people ready to deploy for the particular mission and is not about culling people out. Typically, you will be engaged into the RF at the start of PDT. If for some reason you do not deploy then generally you will be offered the opportunity to serve out the contract in NZ in a RF unit or return to civilian employment if you wish to.
