Chief Rewards Decision Makers
22 May 2007
Eight Army personnel were presented with awards and commendations by the Chief of Army, Major General Lou Gardiner at the Burnham Warrant Officers and Senior NCOs’ mess recently. MAJ GEN Gardiner said that he wanted his personnel to make the right decisions because it is the right thing to do, and these recipients had done just that, demonstrating some of the core values of the Army. According to MajGen Gardiner these recipients have shown great leadership, from a Pte right through to the upper echelons of the Army.
Warrant Officers Class One Bowyer and Broughton MNZM were both awarded the New Zealand Meritorious Service Medal, an award that can only be worn by twenty serving members of the Army at any one time. Their citations describe them as having served exemplary careers, proving themselves to be excellent role models, demonstrating and providing the leadership, integrity and loyalty that marks an excellent service person. WO1 Boyer is currently serving his twenty fifth year with WO1 Broughton entering his 31st.
Burnham’s reluctant hero Pte Brendon Lee was amongst those awarded the Chief of Army’s Commendation. Pte Lee recognised that a nearby swimmer was caught in a rip at Sumner beach, and was having trouble keeping her head above water. Pte Lee went to the swimmer’s aid in very hazardous tidal conditions, and kept her head above water until the local surf lifesavers could get to them, and drag them both to safety. His commendation recognises his bravery, determination and humility. The CA summed the event up as one that was great to see. “It demonstrates the values the Army strives to impart. These values underpin how “we” perform.”
