Survey of Readers - The Results

Survey of readers’ graph.
Survey of readers’ graph.

Late last year, Army News undertook a survey of its readers to establish whether the newspaper is meeting the needs of the diverse audience. The results overall are very positive, indicating that readers highly value the information received through Army News, and also the delivery format.

Respondents rated the paper as informative (very good or excellent 73%), with a high standard of writing/editing (very good or excellent 70%) and design (very good or excellent 75%).

Over 80% of respondents are reading the majority of the publication, and for all the right reasons: 89% for interest, and 57% for information. Over 60% of respondents are passing the Army News on to two or more people, 20% of those are passing to four-plus people. This would indicate that the NZ Army/NZDF activities and profile are reaching more of New Zealand than we probably realise.

Ratings for each individual section (eg, News, Our People) were very high overall, though it would seem that the Entertainment page is less popular, with the crossword etc receiving average scores.

Overwhelmingly, the readers would like content of the paper to remain the same, with a very small percentage of respondents having specific suggestions for improvement. Comments have been noted, and we'll continue to reflect those needs in future content.

An overwhelming majority would like the tabloid style to continue, and the publication to remain the same. Ongoing review and evaluation of content and delivery will ensure we continue to deliver excellence.

Readers were asked if they would also like to receive a magazine in addition to the tabloid newspaper, and the response was 50% (no) and 47% (yes). Asked if they would read a magazine if it were developed, 91% said yes. This suggests that should future content dictate, a magazine would be well received.

A good percent of all respondents would like to receive more international news – covering not only New Zealand operations but those of other countries (56%), plus strategic outcomes of activities (44%), profiles of our people (50%), and government news (23%).

Thank you to all of you who participated in the survey. We received 875 responses, which is nearly 10% of the paper’s circulation.
