Celebrating Southern Sports Stars

Attendance at the recent Army Sports South’s (ASS) awards night had increased since the inaugural event last year. FSM WO1 Malcolm Dean presents PTE Daniel Matchett with the FSM’s 3 LFG Rookie of the Year Award.

Major Bevan Godfrey, Chairman of Army Sports South said, “The objective of the night was to recognise excellence in all facets of sport, especially to recognise the people who sacrifice their time to help others participate and achieve in sport”. Mrs Godfrey presenting the Administrator/Volunteer of the Year Award to SGT Nicola Ruki.

WO1 Grant McCarroll, Army Physical Training Corps, travelled to Burnham, to be the Master of Ceremonies.Tayla Harrison receives his award for Junior Sportsperson of the Year from SSGT Rob Gathergood.

The guest speaker for the evening was Pat Barwick, a stalwart in New Zealand women’s hockey. She gave a lively and interesting address which emphasised the place sport has in people’s lives and how club sport needs to become fun again.Pat Barwick was guest speaker for the evening.

Army sports foster sporting achievements among children, as well as Army personnel.

Commander 3 LFG, Colonel Dave Gawn closed the evening by thanking the event organisers, sponsors, and everyone who participates in sport. MAJ Bevan Godfrey, Chairman of Army Sport South, presents trophy for ASS Sports Team of the Year to SSGT Rob Gathergood from AATC.

In particular, he singled out those people who organise sports within the formation, and noted that without them, our personnel would not be able to excel in their chosen sport – as so many have done over the past year.Colonel Dave Gawn presents SGT Terry Miratana Commander 3 LFG’s Coach of the Year award.
