Celebrating Southern Sports Stars
31 October 2006
Attendance at the recent Army Sports South’s (ASS) awards night had increased since the inaugural event last year.
Major Bevan Godfrey, Chairman of Army Sports South said, “The objective of the night was to recognise excellence in all facets of sport, especially to recognise the people who sacrifice their time to help others participate and achieve in sport”.
WO1 Grant McCarroll, Army Physical Training Corps, travelled to Burnham, to be the Master of Ceremonies.
The guest speaker for the evening was Pat Barwick, a stalwart in New Zealand women’s hockey. She gave a lively and interesting address which emphasised the place sport has in people’s lives and how club sport needs to become fun again.
Army sports foster sporting achievements among children, as well as Army personnel.
Commander 3 LFG, Colonel Dave Gawn closed the evening by thanking the event organisers, sponsors, and everyone who participates in sport.
In particular, he singled out those people who organise sports within the formation, and noted that without them, our personnel would not be able to excel in their chosen sport – as so many have done over the past year.
This event would not have been possible without the generous support of: Nokia; Tim and Debbie Norton, Digital Mobile; Kevin and Sharon Miller, Skyon; Ian and Sharon Kirk, Elite Fitness; Russell and Nigel Lilley, The Rolly Inn; Hot Shots; and New Zealand Breweries.
