The Australia-New Zealand Army-to-Army staff talks were held in Burnham Camp recently. These key inter-army strategic talks aim to strengthen the relationship between the two armies.
New Zealand Deputy Chief of Army, Brigadier Barry Vryenhoek, and Australian Deputy Chief of Army, Major General Ian Gordon, led the discussions, which were attended by nine Australian and 12 New Zealand delegates.
The guests were greeted with a traditional powhiri performed by the Burnham Maori Cultural Group, and a barrack guard from Support Company, 2/1 RNZIR.
The talks help maximise the inter-operabilities of the two armies; improve understanding, effectiveness and bilateral rapport; and build on our long-standing and close alliance.
Discussion focused on matters of mutual interest, including force development, future operating concepts, doctrine, training, personnel and materials.
The talks also provided a forum to identify and solve inter-operability issues and common problems, discuss engagement initiatives and identify long-term capability development issues.
This year’s talks resulted in some very positive outcomes and a clear view of “the way ahead”, with MAJ GEN Gordon expressing his utmost respect for the quality and professionalism of the New Zealand Army.
