James Morrison and the New Zealand Army Band

Internationally acclaimed Australian jazz virtuoso James Morrison will be performing in Christchurch with the New Zealand Army Band this month. Besides trumpet this multi-talented performer also plays trombone, euphonium, flugel horn, tuba, saxophones, and piano.James Morrison.

With an impressive international career, beginning at age 16 with a debut performance in the USA at the Monterey Jazz Festival, James Morrison has performed at the big festivals in Europe - including Montreaux, Pori, North Sea, Nice and Bern. Playing with many jazz legends. Dizzy Gillespie, Cab Calloway, Woody Shaw, Red Rodney, George Benson, Ray Charles, B.B King, Ray Brown and Wynton Marsalis to name a few. He has also had gigs at the world's most famous jazz clubs - the Blue Note and Village Vanguard in New York, the New Morning in Paris and Ronnie Scott's in London.

James Morrison's career has been a rather diverse one for a jazz musician. He recorded "Jazz Meets Symphony" with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Lalo Schifrin, and performed concerts at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for Princess Anne. In 1997 James was awarded The Order of Australia in recognition of his service to the arts.

Aside from touring the world, James is also head of Morrison records, an independent label dedicated to the best of jazz. When not busy writing film scores, composing, or being patron of several youth orchestras, he enjoys abseiling, competing in triathlons, flying his own plane or driving in a rally championship!
