Large scale preparations at Harewood, Christchurch from September each year are just the beginning of New Zealand Defence Force's role in Antarctica. In a location where people experience sensory deprivation such as a reduced sense of smell and colours to the sensory overload of light, and freezing temperatures, New Zealand's service personnel carry out vital support tasks in conditions where simple tasks like tying your bootlaces becomes a major challenge.
