Hayden Joachim Te Waati "Shorty" Giles
Hayden was born in Gore New Zealand on the 5th April 1981. He started playing softball when he was 5 years old playing tee-ball, before moving up to junior league softball. Hayden has played for the Riversdale Softball Team, until he was 13 years then played for Redcaps men in the Southland major league reserve grade until 1996. Hayden joined the New Zealand Army in 2001.
His first post was to Linton Military Camp, where he played senior grade softball for Linton Softball Club.
Hayden has represented the NZ Army Men’s Softball Team from 1994 to the present day. He has also represented the NZDF Men’s Softball Team in 2003 and 2007.
Hayden has represented Eastern Southland and Southland through all age group teams and in 1995, he represented the South Island Men’s Team.
During his time in the Army, Hayden has played for a number of local club teams in Palmerston North, such as Linton, Raiders, Huia Chiefs and Blue Sox Softball Clubs.
During the 2003 Inter-Regional Tournament, Hayden was awarded the Top Batter and MVP Trophies.
Hayden’s older brother Aaron was also in the Army and a member of the Army and NZDF Men’s Teams. In 2004, both Hayden and Aaron were members of the Army Men’s Team that toured Australia for the first time in Army softball history.
